"Eddie Loves Baseball (1.12)"
While stationed on "special assignment" as an undercover detective with London's Scotland Yard, NYPD detective Eddie Arlette and his partner Monty Pippin are dispatched to investigate a shooting. The work-a-day witness to the crime, Ray Boskins is reluctant to testify because he's unsure of exactly what he saw. As he picks out the suspect from the line-up, everyone, including Ray, is floored to discover who he has chosen: Colin Kinney, the marquee player in all of football (soccer), marketing posterboy, and London's ace in the finals which are scheduled for later in the week. Upon recognizing who hes picked out, Ray recants his testimony citing that he's unsure of whether he saw Colin at the scene, or whether he unconsciously picked him out due to familiarity. But, with Colin's gun as evidence at the crime scene and a corroborated Ferrari sighting the night of the shooting (Colin borrowed one for the weekend), Eddie remains convinced Colin is involved…the OJ trial notwithstanding.
A team of six-figure lawyers are quickly hired to navigate Colin through the shoals of this nightmare. He remains silent throughout most of his multiple-day questioning barely ever breaking a sweat. With only circumstantial evidence and no charge against him, Colin can only be held for so long. With pressure from the newspapers, the public, the lawyers, and even his boss, Eddie has to come up with the goods, and fast! Eddie presses forward with his investigation. After questioning Mrs. Kinney, Colin's wife, Eddie discovers that there's more to the case than anyone first imagined. Apparently, Colin's daughter April has been kidnapped and the "ransom" they've demanded is for Colin to throw the football match. Colin, the lawyers and his wife had hoped to keep this matter hushed to ensure April's safety. Eddie knows they'll kill her regardless, so he devises a plan to snare the kidnappers.
The football cup is on TV and Colin is in rare form, scoring goal after goal. Meanwhile, Eddie, Pippin and a team of special ops officers are waiting for a cellphone call to come to Mrs. Kinney from the kidnappers. When it does, she assures them that she will talk to her husband to confirm that he's still going to throw the game. She stays on long enough for the special ops team to trace the call. When the team arrive for the bust, they find an empty apartment. Eddie is crestfallen when he realizes that he has signed the little girls' death warrant. At the last minute, a call comes through from a young Scottland Yard officer, PC Lume, alerting Eddie of a suspicious insider working for the Kinney family. They move the team to the address of the suspect in the nick of time to make the bust and save April.
